Bulldog Drummond - Sapper
Published by Hodder & Stoughton: London, 2007.
First published 1920.
This is such an old-school British pulpy novel. Bulldog Drummond is a bored English Gentleman, an army officer in the first World War who is now seeking adventure. He puts an ad in the paper, and ends up embroiled in a dastardly plot to overthrow England! This is pure mindless fun, and very much of its time. Bulldog Drummond confidently (arrogantly) waltzes headfirst into danger, and gets out because of his resolve and good fortune. His servant, James Denny, is adequately loyal and helpful, and the women in the story are suitably damsel-ish or dangerous. The villain is also fairly nefarious - and working for the communists! - and is left free to return again in the sequel.
This is not going to 'wow' you, but I enjoyed it a lot for what it was. Cheesy, old fashioned, and lots of fun.
Completed 3 November 2019.
