Dogs - Emily Gravett

Published by Macmillan Children's Books: London, 2012 (2009).

A fun book about dogs, opening with "I love dogs." After this the book goes through, giving different types of dogs from "stroppy dogs and soppy dogs" to "Scruffy and smart dogs" among others. The book then ends with the twist that it is being narrated by a cat, which means that the dog "that I love best? Let's see... ...is any dog that won't chase me!"

The illustrations in this book are well drawn, the types of dogs are well varied, and the twist of having the narrator be a cat is a fun joke at the end.

With Ezekiel now more into dogs, this book and Just Me and My Puppy are definite favourites.

This is the first time I have done a 'yearly' top 5 (although I did a ' Top 5 Top 5s ' previously, after my 5th book list), but it seems to fit with the year ending in a 5. The Pōrangi Boy - Shilo Kino

Published by Huia Publishers: Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand, 2021 (2020). Niko Te Kainga-mataa lives in the small town of Pohe Bay, a predominantly Māori community where the New Zealand government is planning to build a prison. Niko's grandfather, Tangaroa, is opposed to the prison, saying that it is going to be built on Māori land that is being watched over by the taniwha Taukere. Unfortunately, Tangaroa is known as the "pōrangi man" (crazy man), and throughout the book we see that he has lost some of his mental faculties - even to the point of urinating on people. As his grandson, and as someone who also wants to stand up against the prison being built, Niko too is labelled as pōrangi. Through the book, Niko has to wrestle with his own beliefs regarding Taukere, as well as learning to take a stronger leadership role in the community, particularly in the area of protesting the prison. Published by Collins Modern Classics: Hammersmith, London: 2001. First published 1954. Sequel to The Hobbit . Followed by The Two Towers ; The Return of The King . The first part of possibly the most famous work of fantasy fiction in existence, The Fellowship of the Ring tells the story of Frodo Baggins, nephew of the famous Bilbo Baggins, and the beginning of his quest to destroy the One Ring. The story unfolds at a far slower pace than fans of the movie may be anticipating, but in doing so it highlights Tolkien's skills as a writer, and gives more depth to the world of Middle-earth than is possible even in a near-three hour film. Some of the differences in the novel include a detour through the Old Woods and encounter with the strange character of Tom Bombadil, an encounter with barrow-wights, and the inclusion of other hobbits who help the main protagonists on their journey.
