The Ashes of Worlds - Kevin J Anderson

Published by Orbit Books/Hachette Book Group, Inc.: New York, NY, 2009 (2008).
Book Seven of 'The Saga of Seven Suns' series: 'Hidden Empire'; 'A Forest of Stars'; 'Horizon Storms'; 'Scattered Suns'; 'Of Fire and Night'; 'Metal Swarm'; 'The Ashes of Worlds'.

Aaaand, this is it! The final book in the Saga of the Seven Suns! Wow...

The majority of this book is devoted to paying off the various character arcs that remain and finishing off the various villains that still live. By the end we have happy endings for pretty much every surviving protagonist, and the galaxy is safe from every single threat that still remained at the beginning of the book.

Some of the plot threads wrap up in ways that are a bit unexpected, but overall this is a book that is simply powering towards its ending. Characters do some odd things in order to be where the author needs them to be, either to further the plot or to be killed off (I personally would not be going down onto a Klikiss-infested world for any reason), and all 'elemental-infused' beings that are not elementals themselves are 'defused' by the end of the novel in one way or another.

So... its a satisfying ending in some ways... and slightly too nicely wrapped up in others. It's hard to wrap up a long running book series perfectly. Overall, I really like this series. I enjoyed reading it. I think it would make an epic multi-season television series. I will likely read other books by the same author in the future.

And it won't be a series I rush back to quickly either.

Completed 19 June 2022.
